How can I sing and play guitar at the same time?

I just received a guitar for Christmas and my friend taught me to play Blowin 'in The Wind and it was not. My problem is that I can not sing along play. I do not really know how to explain, but when you play the guitar rhythm is slightly different from the beat as you sing but when I sing and play at the same time, I can not really strum Beat at right.
