how to play the guitar basics

Do you need a Wii or PS2 to play guitar hero?
Our son aged 6 has a set of guitar that plugs into the TV and is quite good at it. We were thinking about getting him a guitar hero base for his birthday in a few months. But we do have not a Wii or PS2. Is there a version that you can plug into the TV?
The official Guitar Hero games require a console to play, and they only work on some consoles. You'll need either a PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360 or Wii. There are cheap imitations to plug into the TV that are not worth having. One of those I know, is a guitar Fever.
